Bipolar Disorder And Manic Depression - 2377 Words

Bipolar Disorder, formally known as Manic Depression, is a mental disorder where an individual suffers from abnormal mood swings, experiencing both highs and lows (Hockenbury others, 2015, pg. 585). Severe depression with bouts of irrational happiness, and ecstasy are all symptoms an individual with bipolar disorder may experience (Hockenbury others, 2015, pg 585). DSM-5, 2013 states, â€Å"a small percentage of Bipolar disorder experience only manic episodes†. When someone is in mania they feel like they are on top of the world, they are extremely happy and sure of themselves but often are making irrational decisions. This mood can last for long periods of time, during this time they will not sleep much and yet still be able to function. Although these individuals to think they are happy during their manic states they are not, these manic episodes are extreme and can be debilitating to not only the individual but their family as well. Post mania state, these individuals wil l then fall into a severely depressive state where they have long periods of feeling hopeless and feeling worthless. Sometimes a person with bipolar disorder can have some speech difficulties where they slur or speak too fast, Hockenbury others, 2015 state it’s the person trying to keep up with the racing thoughts in their heads. These thoughts are often categorized as a flight of ideas, where the person jumps from topic to topic.
